The Elk Valley Rugby Football Club is hosting a garden party fundraiser Saturday (Sept. 13), aiming to raise money for player safety, coaching development, and a planned outreach trip to Colombia.
Lavinia McElwee, the women’s team captain and netball director for the club, said the club is focused on building a safe and accessible environment for everyone involved, from youth to adults. She explained that the event is about making sure the club has the resources to support these goals.
Funds raised will reportedly go towards gym and field rentals, coaching resources, training gear, and travel costs.
Some of the money will also support a trip to Colombia, where members of the club will run rugby lessons and life-skills programming for youth.
“We’re sending a group to work with young people in under-resourced communities,” McElwee said.
“Rugby becomes the starting point for bigger conversations–about teamwork, confidence and leadership.”
The club, which serves about 300 members in the Elk Valley, is also aiming to strengthen internal coaching for youth, women’s, and men’s programs.
A live auction at the event will include local business donations and a signed jersey from the Canadian women’s team worn during the 2025 Rugby World Cup.
