A Cranbrook, B.C., man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a Calgary woman last year.
Nehemiah Walter John Oslund, 29, was taken into custody in British Columbia and is awaiting transportation into Alberta, where a date for his next court appearance will be set, Calgary police said in a news release.
The charge stems from the death of Jelisa Maschki, 23, who was found in medical distress by a passerby along the Nose Creek Pathway in northeast Calgary at about 4 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2024.
She was reportedly transported to hospital in life-threatening condition and later died as a result of her injuries.
In the days following an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, investigators gathered additional evidence and concluded that Maschki’s death was the result of a altercation that took place the night before, on Dec. 8, between 9 and 11 p.m.
Police say Maschki and Oslund were not known to each other and had only a brief interaction before the altercation.
“We want to thank the Cranbrook RCMP for their assistance and co-operation in this investigation,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service homicide unit.
“We have been working diligently since December 2024 to ensure Jelisa’s family and loved ones were able to have some closure in this investigation.”
This is a developing story…
