The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has now opened a new park, located roughly 20 minutes south of Jaffray.
On Wednesday (Aug. 20), officials opened the Waldo Cove Area Park and the Columbia River Heritage Touring Centre.
The stop is part of the Columbia River Treaty (CRT) Uncovery Tour — a heritage touring route linking various stories of Ktunaxa and non-Indigenous resilience when the valleys behind the Treaty dams were filled with water and harmed the ecosystem.
“The CRT Uncovery Tour Waldo Cove Information Centre provides insight into the history of the town of Waldo that was lost after the construction of the Libby Dam that resulted in the flooding of the Kootenay River Valley and creation of the Koocanusa Reservoir,” said the RDEK.

Elected officials, members of Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi‘it First Nation, The Friends of Lake Koocanusa Society, the Columbia Basin Trust, Kootenay Rockies Tourism and RDEK staff were all present at the grand opening.
