Kimberley officials are urging the public to stay alert as multiple cougar sightings have been reported in the Nature Park area.
Trail users are advised to exercise extra caution around hotspots in Forest Crowne, Volksmarch Trail, and Lions Way. If you do come across a cougar, the Conservation Officer Service (COS) recommends the following:
- Stop. Never approach or feed a cougar at any time.
- Keep back at least 100 metres.
- Go around the cougar. Maintain eye contact, speak in a confident voice and slowly back out of the area.
- Use natural barriers, such as trees and other large obstacles, to separate you from the cougar.
- Use a stick, a rock, a walking stick and a bear spray for protection.
“We have been advised by Conservation that there have been multiple sightings of a cougar in the Forest Crowne Gate area,” wrote Kimberley RCMP.
“The cougar is not believed to have been responsible for anything but please be cautious when in these areas.”
Residents are also asked to report all sightings or negative interactions to the COS 24-hour hotline at 1-877-952-7277, or through the City by phone at 250-427-9663.
You can also email bylaw@kimberley.ca and include the location of the sighting and your contact information.
