The annual Hometown for Hunger has capped off its 10th year as one of its biggest yet, with over $11,500 raised to support the Cranbrook Salvation Army’s local food program– beating last year’s figures of $8,500.
Funding will be permanently invested in an endowment fund with the Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR), which will provide the Salvation Army with ongoing annual funding for its food program.
“Overall, we provide about 5,000 meals per month in the City of Cranbrook. With the need in the community continuing to grow, and food prices on the rise, every dollar counts, and we sincerely appreciate all the support from the community,” said Major Rick Robins with the Cranbrook Salvation Army.
Attendees participated in activities ranging from bubbles and face painting to the dunk tank and a vintage car show.
“Local celebrity” dunkees included Rewind Radio’s own Kayla May, Sven Sloeserwij from Cranbrook Tourism and Kim Levie from the Rockin’ in the Rockies Car Club.
CFKR Executive Director Lynnette Wray was grateful for the turnout, saying, “Wow! Cranbrook showed up in a big way for this event, with generosity and kindness, to fight hunger in our community, now and forever.”
Denham Ford and StellarVista Credit Union matched donations up to $1,000 for this year’s event.
Donations are still being accepted for this year’s event online or by mailing cash or cheque to the CFKR office located on the Ground Floor of the Coworking Space at 131 7th Ave. S.
