The City of Fernie has decided to stick with its original plan for a new fire hall after a passionate public hearing on Tuesday (Aug. 19).
Some residents spoke out against building the $16 million hall on Prentice Park due to the loss of Servello Field, but moving to 902 2nd Street would carry a host of other problems.
Staff reported that the project timeline would be extended, with completion pushed back from 2027 to 2028, and the site would be smaller.
Firefighters would also have to navigate through residential areas during an emergency.
Mayor Nic Milligan had to end the debate before it dragged on any longer.
Council unanimously voted against relocating the fire hall.
Staying on Prentice Park means the project is still set to break ground in the spring next year.
