Mounties in Kimberley are reminding folks to follow key rules about e-cycling down local streets – unless they want their bikes taken.
Whether it’s pedestrians, cars, or scooters, the RCMP said there are specific regulations in place to ensure the safety of everyone sharing the road. The following rules apply to e-bikes:
- Must have pedals or hand cranks that can propel the bike when the motor is engaged.
- The electric motor must have a maximum power output compliant with the e-bike class.
- Batteries and motors must be securely tied and insulated to the e-bike, with a maximum motor power of 500W.
- E-bikes must not be capable of going over 25 kilometres per hour on clean, paved and level public roads.
- Riders under 18 must wear helmets. The minimum age to ride higher-powered e-bikes is generally 16 years.
“If the E-Bike is in contravention of the previous rules, the RCMP can seize the bike for the safety of the public,” said Kimberley RCMP.
“While we understand these vehicles are fun to ride, rules are created for the safety of all the users of the road and must be adhered to.”
