Several East Kootenay athletes are competing at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John’s and are reportedly already making their mark.
On Tuesday (Aug. 12), Cranbrook’s Sophie Sheppard helped Team B.C. to a 6–2 win over Nova Scotia in women’s lacrosse, moving the squad up in the standings.
The young athlete, who has played lacrosse for 12 years, is the first female player from Cranbrook and the first modern-era athlete of any gender to make a Team B.C. indoor lacrosse roster.
She also captured a gold medal at the B.C. Summer Games last year.
Fernie’s Maddox Johnson is set to compete in the men’s mountain bike cross-country race on Aug. 20, considered one of the Games’ most demanding events.
Cranbrook’s Mia Molner will play with Team B.C.’s women’s volleyball team.
Molner was part of the squad that went undefeated to win Canada Cup gold in 2024, the first time B.C. had claimed the title since 2016.
At the 2025 Games, Molner and her teammates will face Ontario on Aug. 20 and Alberta on Aug. 21 at the Field House in St. John’s.
The Canada Games bring together thousands of the country’s top young athletes every two years.
This is a developing story.
