Officials are now warning residents about multiple masses of logs blocking the Elk River near town.
The City of Fernie has installed new signs regarding the logjams near the Stanford Inn, located on the left side of the river. Along with these signs, the City and Fernie Search and Rescue have also issued safety reminders to minimize the risks of being near the logs, including:
- Floaters sticking with bridge to bridge, staying right of the river and getting out at the steps.
- For longer floats, river users must have a craft that can be steered around obstacles.
- Do not allow children to navigate solo.
- Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD), but remember it can be an entanglement hazard in a logjam.
- Estimate your time of arrival and ensure someone knows your itinerary.
“Play safe and enjoy the beauty of the Elk River,” wrote the City of Fernie.
Additional logjams have also been spotted behind the Transfer Station.
