Police in Cranbrook have recently been involved in a weekend rescue in the backcountry.
On Saturday (Aug. 2) at around 5:22 p.m., RCMP received an emergency activation dispatch from a Garmin device, and tracked the distress call to roughly 13 kilometres up the Wildhorse Forest Service Road.
Eighteen people in cars and side-by-sides were found on the far side of a bridge washout and were not able to safely come back.
Search and Rescue, Emergency Management BC and RCMP police dogs were paged out to support the scene, and an aerial response eventually followed due to rough terrain and lack of road access past the washout.
All individuals were flown safely out by helicopter.
“We are thankful for the quick action and professionalism of all responding agencies,” said Staff Sergeant Barry Graham.
“This incident is a reminder of how rapidly conditions in remote areas can change. We encourage anyone venturing into the backcountry to always carry emergency communication devices and be prepared for the unexpected.”
No injuries were reported.
