The RCMP in Cranbrook have been responding to a noticeable rash of thefts over the past month– especially on trailers located in industrial areas.
Police received reports of three thefts on Monday (July 21) alone. A person came home from vacation and found that his Springdale travel trailer had been stolen from his friend’s place at the 4700 block of Highway 95A. The trailer bears an Alberta license plate 5JF973 and is pictured above.
Another report involved culprits cutting a fence in the industrial area, breaking into a cargo trailer, and then stealing over $2,000 worth of Dewalt tools. More than $4,000 worth of Milwaukee tools was also stolen over the weekend when someone forced entry into an enclosed trailer in the 1200 block of North 6th Street.
“The Cranbrook RCMP Detachment is taking proactive steps in response to this spike in thefts, including increased patrols throughout the community, enhancing visibility in high-risk areas, and have deployed both marked and unmarked units as part of their targeted enforcement strategy,” wrote Cranbrook police in a social media post.
Investigators are now actively pursuing leads and surveillance footage from recent incidents.
Residents are advised to practice safety measures, such as not leaving valuables in unattended trailers, using heavy-duty locks and hitch immobilizers, and recording the serial numbers of their belongings.
Mounties also ask the public to remain vigilant in reporting suspicious people or vehicles loitering near worksites, equipment, or industrial areas.
Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
