A number of non-profit housing providers in the region are making energy upgrades aimed at improving efficiency and reducing utility costs.
According to Columbia Basin Trust, 69 buildings representing 1,097 housing units are receiving retrofits or solar installations.
The projects are supported by $5.8 million in funding from the Trust, with an additional $4.5 million contributed from other sources.
The initiative is being delivered in partnership with BC Housing and the BC Non-Profit Housing Association.
It includes assistance with energy assessments, planning, rebate programs and the completion of retrofits or solar panel installations.
Upgrades vary by building and include the installation of heat pumps, updated insulation, updated lighting, and air sealing, depending on individual site needs.
Examples of participating sites include:
-
Fernie: The Fernie Family Housing Society is installing a rooftop solar array at North End Court, which includes a 35-unit apartment building.
-
Marysville: Valley View Lodge, operated by the Marysville Lions Housing Society, is installing a solar array to power common areas.
-
Nakusp: The Arrowtarian Senior Citizens Society is completing retrofits across five phases of the Rotary Villa Complex, including heat pumps, hot water tanks, and LED lighting.
Columbia Basin Trust says the goal is to reduce operating costs and improve long-term affordability and efficiency in non-profit housing.
