Fernie city council has approved a letter of support for Elk Valley Resources’ proposed Fording River Extension (FRX) project as it seeks to move into the environmental assessment phase.
The FRX project would extend the life of EVR’s existing Fording River Operations by approximately 35 years.
EVR is currently asking the Environmental Assessment Office for a readiness decision to begin formal assessments and has requested support from local governments.
The company says the extension could create around 2,600 direct jobs and up to 8,000 indirect and induced positions, in addition to current employment.
Fording River currently employs about 1,500 people from across the Elk Valley, with EVR’s total workforce around 5,500.
Support letters have already been submitted by the Regional District of East Kootenay, the District of Sparwood, and the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass.
The District of Elkford is also preparing one.
If the project receives full approval, it would extend coal production in the region.
More information on the project can be found here: Fording River Extension.
