Construction has begun on an accessibility upgrade at Key City Theatre in Cranbrook.
The theatre announced this week that work is officially underway on the installation of a new elevator, which will allow guests to access all levels of the theatre with more ease.
“This brings us one step closer to making the theatre more accessible for everyone,” the organization shared on social media, thanking the community for its support in helping bring the project to life.
The elevator installation was made a reality through a combination of community fundraising and government investment.
The theatre’s Dreams Come True raffle raised $35,940, while the Department of Canadian Heritage contributed $200,000.
Additional funding came from Columbia Basin Trust and the Regional District of East Kootenay’s Electoral Area C.
Once complete, the elevator will connect the first and second floors of the building, making the theatre’s programs and performances more accessible to people with mobility challenges.
Construction crews are on site, though no official completion date has been announced.
The theatre says it will provide updates as work progresses.
