A new tagging system for private mooring buoys on Lake Windermere will be introduced in early August, aimed at improving compliance and clarity for water users.
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) says the tags apply to buoys in areas covered by water zoning under the Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw.
Since 2013, it’s been a requirement that buoys be placed only in permitted zones that meet both Transport Canada and RDEK regulations.
Under the new system, buoy tags will be colour-coded:
-
Green means the buoy meets all regulations.
-
Blue indicates it doesn’t fully comply, and must be used seasonally.
-
Red suggests the buoy may be in violation and could be removed.
To be registered, all buoys must be clearly marked with the owner’s name, address, phone number, and the letters “PRV” for private.
Owners who haven’t yet registered their buoy are asked to contact the RDEK’s Columbia Valley Office with their contact information and GPS location of the buoy.
The district says examples of the new tags and more information are available online at engage.rdek.bc.ca/buoy.
