Interior Health has issued a toxic drug supply advisory across the region.
On Monday (July 7), authorities said there has been an increase in the amount of carfentanil detected in Down, or opioid, samples in the Interior Health region over the past month.
Up to four per cent carfentanil has been detected in Down– roughly the same as a fentanyl concentration of 400 per cent.
Samples are also frequently found with benzodiazepines and tranquillizers on top of carfentanil, which could boost the drugs’ effect and significantly increase the risk of overdose and death.
“If you are going to use drugs, get them checked first,” wrote Interior Health. “No matter what or how you use (smoking, snorting, injecting) take steps to prevent overdose.”
Other tips include:
- Stay aware of the risks involved with mixing drugs, including alcohol.
- Use a buddy or OPS service– never alone.
- Start with a small amount and space out doses.
- Carry naloxone and know how to use it.
