The City of Fernie is moving ahead with its latest living documents, as staff begin drafting a new housing needs report to be added to its Official Community Plan (OCP) in the fall.
V3 Companies has been contracted to conduct a housing needs report that will inform the community’s land use and zoning plans over the coming decade.
Project Manager Kristen Harder and Senior Advisor Jonathan Schmidt, with Blue Rock Planning, presented their latest report and engagement plan to Council on Tuesday, June 24.
“One of the things that isn’t a surprise to anyone probably is that housing affordability is really challenged in the city and by different types of people too,” said Shmidt. “It’s not just your young 20-somethings working at the ski hill. There’s a variety of different people that are challenged by the housing conditions within the city.”
Residents may see more OCP-related content from September to November this year when staff ramp up promotions, including ads, posters, open houses, and other initiatives.
The provincially mandated report is due to be included in the OCP draft on December 31 for all B.C. municipalities. The deadline to release a new Community Plan is set for spring 2027.
