Cranbrook has started Indigenous Peoples Day festivities a little early as the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Child and Family Service Society (KKCFSS) hosts a celebration in Rotary Park this afternoon (Jun. 18).
From now until 5:00 p.m., the KKCFSS is inviting residents to celebrate with games, music, dancing, speeches and more.
“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Community’,” wrote the group in a Facebook post. “[L] et’s honour the rich heritage, traditions, and vibrant spirit of Indigenous Peoples together.”
Those in attendance include Cranbrook and Kimberley Mayors Wayne Price and Don McCormick, Kootenay-Rockies MLA Pete Davis, Ktunaxa Nation Council CAO Debbie Whitehead, and more.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is observed annually on June 21, the summer solstice.
The ʔakisqnuk First Nation is also hosting its own celebratory dinner up north from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the Lakeshore Campground, at 3151 Hwy 93/95 near Windermere.
