As the RDEK prepares to open a new Transfer Station in Radium, staff are encouraging residents to pre-sort recyclables at home to save time at the site.
“A simple home sorting system can make drop-offs much quicker,” said Kevin Paterson, RDEK’s general manager of engineering and environmental services.
Unlike the single-bin Yellow system, the Recycle BC Depot allows for more materials but requires separation.
The Radium site includes six main categories: paper/cardboard, containers, flexible plastics, glass, and two types of Styrofoam (plain and printed).
Paterson recommends using reusable bags or bins for key categories at home.
“I bring separate bags for each main type, then just empty them into the right bins at the depot,” he said.
Other tips: pre-seal items, organize your vehicle for efficient unloading, and check accepted items before visiting.
