South Country firefighters have battled a blaze at the former Galloway mill site near Jaffray Tuesday evening (Jun. 10).
Just after 7 p.m., 14 members from the Elko, Jaffray and Baynes Lake Fire Departments responded with six fire engines, a water truck and an excavator.
“The fire was confined to a log pile and we took immediate action to suppress it and fully wet it down,” explained Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire Deputy Chief Ben Goertzen. “There was no risk of spread and our team did an excellent job of quickly extinguishing the fire.”
Crews remained on scene for about three hours to ensure there were no more hot spots.
There were no injuries from the fire, and the cause is unknown at this time.
