The number of motor vehicle incidents may have stalled slightly during the pandemic, but new data from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) shows that the meter has been ticking up again across the province.
Car crashes on B.C. roads have gone up by roughly 35 per cent over the last five years to 303,593 in 2024.
In the Cranbrook area, incidents went up 13 per cent – from 1,251 in 2020 to 1,413 in 2024. More than 200 of those are located at the intersection of Cranbrook St N, Theatre Rd, and Victoria Ave N, near access to the Tamarack Shopping Centre.
“As our province continues to experience record population growth, this means there are more vehicles on our roads, which can lead to greater road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, and ultimately, more crashes,” wrote the ICBC in a news release on Wednesday (June 4).
“At the same time, the way people travel is also changing. People in urban areas are using more varieties and methods of transportation including ridesharing services and micromobility devices such as scooters, mopeds and e-bikes.”
Most crashes in Key City only dealt damage to properties, with the total number of injuries and deaths going down from 140 to 126 in the same period.
More details on deaths and police-reported crashes are set to be published this fall. Offences and ticket data will also be updated at that time.
