Families in Cranbrook can take part in a province-wide initiative promoting outdoor recreation during Family Fishing Weekend, taking place June 13 to 15.
Family Fishing Weekend allows Canadian residents to fish without a licence for three days, with the goal of introducing more people to recreational fishing.
While licence fees are waived from June 13 to 15, participants are still required to follow provincial fishing regulations.
Locally, a public event is scheduled for Sunday, June 15, at Idlewild Park, running from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The event is one of five being held across the Kootenay region and is organized with support from local fishing clubs, hatcheries, and community volunteers.
Activities at events across the region vary, but often include fishing clinics, fly-tying demonstrations, youth education stations, loaner equipment, and environmental initiatives such as stream clean-ups.
According to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, licence sales have increased across all age groups over the past year, with growth in the 16 to 25-year-old demographic.
Organizers say the weekend is aimed at fostering long-term interest in fishing and outdoor activities.
Other Family Fishing Weekend events in the region will be held in Nelson, Invermere, Nakusp, and Revelstoke.
The public can visit bcfamilyfishing.ca or the Fisheries and Oceans Canada website for information.
