A local 85-year-old man reported missing from the Sparwood area has been found safe after spending a night outdoors in remote terrain near Phillips Peak.
On May 31 at approximately 9:04 p.m., Elk Valley Regional RCMP received a report of the missing man after he failed to meet a friend for a planned dinner in town.
Concerned for his well-being, the friend contacted authorities.
The man had reportedly intended to visit a remote cabin in the area earlier that day and was expected to return in time for the evening engagement.
RCMP immediately launched a coordinated search effort, involving resources from Crowsnest Pass and conducting home checks, financial activity reviews, and cellphone pings in an attempt to locate him.
Despite efforts, his whereabouts remained unknown overnight.
The following morning, on June 1 at 11:03 a.m., two witnesses contacted police after locating the man’s vehicle stuck along the Weigert Creek Forest Service Road, near Phillips Peak.
The man had left the vehicle on foot after it became immobilized but sustained an ankle injury during his trek, forcing him to spend the night outside in the conditions.
Elkford and Sparwood Search and Rescue teams were activated and responded promptly to the area, along with BC Ambulance Service.
Search crews quickly located the man, who was then transported to hospital for assessment and treatment.
Elk Valley Regional RCMP extend their sincere thanks to the dedicated Search and Rescue volunteers.
RCMP are reminding the public of the importance of backcountry safety.
Anyone planning to travel in remote areas is urged to share their travel plans with someone in advance, carry adequate clothing, food, and water, and bring a communication device capable of contacting emergency services in off-grid areas.
