As summer approaches, WorkSafeBC is urging employers to prioritize safety for young and new workers.
Each year, nearly 7,000 young people in B.C. are injured on the job, with about 800 suffering serious injuries.
Over the past five years, 34 have died in workplace incidents.
“Young workers are especially vulnerable due to inexperience and lack of training,” said Angelique Prince, Director of Prevention Programs and Services at WorkSafeBC.
In 2024, most injuries occurred in the service sector (1,282 claims), construction (1,063), and retail (492).
Employers are legally required to provide proper orientation, training, and supervision — and to ensure young workers know their right to refuse unsafe work.
WorkSafeBC also supports youth safety through its annual student video contest and Student WorkSafe educational resources.
