The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce is throwing its full support behind a policy initiative aimed at promoting and sustaining British Columbia’s steelmaking coal industry.
The policy, set to be presented by the North Vancouver Chamber at the BC Chamber of Commerce AGM on June 4 in Nanaimo, aims to highlight the industry’s role in regional and provincial economies.
The steelmaking coal sector generates over 5,300 full-time jobs in the East Kootenay region, including more than 500 in Cranbrook.
It contributes $1.5 billion annually to B.C.’s economy, with $400 million.
The proposed policy calls on the provincial government to:
-
Promote Canada’s high-quality steelmaking coal internationally.
-
Collaborate with industry to ensure long-term growth and sustainability.
-
Raise public awareness of the sector’s role in steel production and economic development.
“The Cranbrook Chamber, along with other regional chambers, stands firmly behind this initiative,” said Executive Director Stacey Brensrud.
“It’s essential for the long-term viability of our communities.”
The Chamber encourages members to engage with its Advocacy Committee to provide input and help shape future initiatives.
