Environment Canada has now issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of East Kootenay this evening, May 29.
At 5:47 p.m., meteorologists are tracking a severe storm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain in the Elk Valley and East Kootenay, near Invermere.
A severe thunderstorm 20 km southwest of Elkford, one 20 km southeast of Fernie, and a cluster of storms 35 km northeast of Fairmont Hot Springs are all moving northeast at 40 km/h.
Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and make roads hard to see.
“Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. When thunder roars, go indoors!” wrote the environment agency. “Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”
A thunderstorm watch remains in effect over the south, near Cranbrook. A watch is issued only when conditions are favourable for the development of a severe storm. A warning would be the next level up – when a storm is almost certainly happening.
To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #BCStorm.
