The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR), in partnership with Key City Theatre and Cranbrook Pride, will screen Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story as part of Pride Month celebrations.
The documentary, produced by Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) and the Edmonton Queer History Project, follows Vriend’s fight for human rights after he was fired in 1991 for his sexual orientation.
His case led to a landmark 1998 Supreme Court ruling that recognized sexual orientation under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
“We’re so pleased to be part of this national initiative,” said CFKR executive director Lynette Wray.
“This is an important story about inclusion and the courage it takes to stand up for human rights. We’re excited to share it with the community as part of a broader celebration of Pride in Cranbrook.”
The screening is one of several local events, including Pride in the Park on June 7 and the Faces of Pride art show opening June 5.
More details are available via Cranbrook Pride and Key City Theatre.
