The City of Cranbrook is set to launch an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) on June 6, 2025, seeking public input on borrowing up to $3.5 million for its share of the new Phillips UV Disinfection Facility.
The initiative, approved by Council on May 26, aims to enhance drinking water safety and meet provincial water treatment standards.
The proposed facility would add ultraviolet (UV) treatment to the city’s system, currently reliant on chlorine gas alone.
The upgrade aims to address safety risks, protect against chlorine-resistant pathogens like Cryptosporidium, and strengthen climate resilience during extreme weather events.
This project follows a successful $9.5 million grant awarded in 2024 through the federal-provincial Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
Under the AAP, the City may proceed with borrowing unless at least 1,573 electors (10% of eligible voters) submit formal objections by 4:30 p.m. MT on July 18, 2025.
Elector Response Forms must follow the City’s format and be submitted in person to City Hall.
