Two East Kootenay communities are taking action to address local housing needs through new and upcoming affordable housing projects.
In Elkford, 25 new affordable rental homes have opened for seniors and people living with disabilities at 214 Alpine Way.
The four-storey building features one-bedroom units, including three fully accessible and 22 adaptable homes.
Monthly rents range from $445 to $1,300, based on tenant income.
Funded in part by a $2.8 million investment from BC Housing, the project is operated by the Elkford Housing Society and aims to support independent living close to community and services.
In Cranbrook, Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC is working with the City on a potential affordable homeownership development.
On Monday night, Council approved Habitat’s request to prepare a proposal for City-owned land at 2600 4th Street South.
If viable, the project would provide income-based, no-down-payment mortgages to families who also help build their own homes.
This initiative builds on a 2014 partnership between the City and Habitat for Humanity and reflects efforts to improve housing affordability and stability across the region.
Both projects align with broader provincial and municipal strategies to address the housing crisis.
