Key City residents are urged to stay safe this camping season by practicing fire-aware habits.
Just under 30 per cent of wildfires last year were caused by human activity, and Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services have now issued a few safety tips to help reduce the risk of turning your s’mores into scorched earth:
- Only burn charcoal or seasoned wood
- Set up on a flat, fireproof surface away from roofs, branches, and wires.
- Keep at least 5 feet of space between your fire and any buildings, fences, or property lines.
- Fire pits must go up to a maximum of 24 inches wide, 20 inches high– keeping 16 inches of space from any greenery and 10 feet away from anything that could be flammable.
- Chimeneas and portable fireplaces must be outdoor-only.
“Campfires can be wonderful things, but let’s keep them safe, respectful, and fun for everyone,” wrote the City of Cranbrook. “And remember: if it’s too windy, too dry, or fire restrictions are in place — skip the s’mores and keep the flames out.”
