With Victoria Day long weekend approaching, Cranbrook drivers are being urged to prioritize safety as the region heads into the unofficial start of camping and road trip season.
The Southern Interior sees an average of 322 crashes and 76 injuries during this holiday weekend each year, according to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).
Speed, distraction and impaired driving are the top contributing factors.
Police will be increasing enforcement throughout the weekend and are reminding drivers to plan their route, check their vehicle, drive sober and stay focused behind the wheel.
“Distraction is the number one cause of crashes this weekend,” says ICBC.
“That means putting your phone away and watching the road, especially with more motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians out now that the weather is warming up.”
Locally, Highway 3, Highway 95 and popular routes to lakes and campsites are expected to be busier than usual. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions at DriveBC.ca and allow extra time for travel.
Safety tips for Cranbrook-area roads:
-
Do a pre-trip vehicle check, including tires, fluids and lights.
-
Drive at safe speeds, particularly in construction zones.
-
Increase following distance to allow time to stop safely.
-
Avoid distractions such as mobile phones or screens.
-
Plan ahead for a safe ride home if using alcohol or cannabis.
