The City of Fernie says there has been an uptick in bear activity in town, and is asking residents to be “extra diligent.”
The city provided a list of tips for residents to help “reduce the risk of bear encounters.”
- Not storing your garbage outside between collection days.
- Avoid feeding birds or using bird feeders
- Feed pets indoors
- Keep barbecues clean and free of any grease
For any residents who don’t have access to indoor space to store waste, the city suggests using bear-friendly dumpsters, open 24/7 at the Fernie Transfer Station, City Hall, Max Turyk, or Fernie Aquatic Centre.
In a release, the city asks everyone to do their part, so the community can “co-exist peacefully with bears in the area.”
