The Elk Valley Regional RCMP detachment has provided information on its police presence in the area of the Fernie Hospital on Thursday, May 8.
Mounties say they received a call from the hospital about a local man driving to the site with a firearm, threatening to harm himself.
Mounties say the suspect is known to police, and officers worked to search the area, leading to them containing a section along 2 Avenue in Fernie.
The Southeast District Containment Team was then deployed in support, and RCMP made contact with the suspect.
After a short period, Mounties say he surrendered himself under the Mental Health Act, and was taken to the Fernie hospital for an evaluation. According to police, a search of his residence revealed he was not in possession of any firearms.
RCMP say their investigation is ongoing in support of the hospital, and they work closely with healthcare staff to ensure a plan is in place for these situations.
In a release, Elk Valley Regional RCMP said, “The City of Fernie was kept apprised of the unfolding event and updated after the apprehension was completed. The Elk Valley Regional RCMP are thankful to the public for responding positively and quickly to directions provided by officers on scene which helped in the quick resolution of the event.”
