A free, community-led event starts this weekend at Rotary Park, and Cranbrook drivers may need to make some route adjustments because of it.
Parts of 10th Avenue South and 1st Street South will be closed from May 9 to May 10 for the Kootenay Children’s Festival.

“This is to allow space for festival activities and event vendors,” wrote the City of Cranbrook in a release. “Big thanks to the Key City Theatre for organizing this fantastic event!”
The annual Kidsfest is now in its 39th year. Organizers tout it as one of the last free children’s festivals in British Columbia, but that’s not to say there wasn’t a lot of effort put into it.
“I think for anybody that’s got young kids or kids in elementary and even early middle school, it’s a great space to explore, and there’s lots going on,” said Key City Theatre Executive Director Galen Olstead. “There’s food trucks, and of course, we’ve got the very first outdoor farmer’s market taking place this weekend as well, right alongside the festival.”
Other unique festival staples include circus acts, a watermelon station, and activities like Paint the Van and the City of Cranbrook’s Touch the Truck.
“We’ve got the fire truck, I believe there’s a garbage truck that’s brought in, so there’s this very mechanical hydraulic vehicle that they bring in for that, and a bus. They’ve got a city bus that they bring in, and so kids can explore and get right up close to those vehicles.”
The festival is set to run from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on May 9 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 10.
