Sections of the Trans Canada Trail along Kimberley and the Elk Valley are due for a well-earned makeover after local volunteer groups receive a new funding grant.
The national organization’s Trail Care Grant Program has awarded $1,250 each to various trail projects and groups across British Columbia – four of which are located in the East Kootenay region.
“It’s important to continue these initiatives because it encourages our trail volunteers to continue to do the work along the trail that is necessary to maintain and upkeep the trail system,” said Chrissy Cusack, community and volunteers coordinator with Trans Canada Trail.
“It also provides them the opportunity to celebrate their volunteers and the hard work that they do along the trail.”
Some of this year’s projects funded by the grant include:
- Kimberley Trail Society: volunteer training in the chainsaw-operating force,
- Elkford Trails Alliance Society: trail clean-up and a volunteer appreciation event,
- Fernie Trails Alliance: an invasive species management project and volunteer appreciation barbecue.
Nearly $250,000 has been awarded to 222 volunteer groups nationwide. You can find more details on this grant and other initiatives related to the 29,500-kilometre trail on the Trans Canada Trail website.
