The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is asking residents to be “In it Together” and build community resilience during National Emergency Preparedness Week, from May 4 to May 10.
“When an emergency happens, the most immediate help will often come from those around you, including your neighbours,” said RDEK Communications Manager Loree Duczek. “Connecting and building relationships with them can create a better support system in the event of an emergency and lead to a faster recovery following an event.”
To boost personal preparedness, the RDEK is also urging folks to sign up for Voyent Alert!, a notification system used for regional evacuation alerts. Residents are asked to sign up by May 8, as a region-wide test is scheduled for Friday, May 9, at 2:00 p.m.
If you have the app already, it may still be a good idea to check that it’s still active.
“Many mobile phones will offload apps that haven’t been used recently. This often happens with the app as people don’t use it regularly. This is a perfect time to go in and check that it is active on your phone,” Duczek added.
Other Emergency Preparedness Week activities include the Wildfire Community Preparedness Ember Stomp at the Jaffray Community Hall tomorrow, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Columbia Valley Emergency Preparedness Fair on May 10. More details are available on the RDEK website.
