A $3.16-million renovation is underway at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) starting this week.
On March 24, work begins on several NICU enhancements such as ceilings, five workstations, a dictation area, etc. Other additions include a video and intercom system, an infant abduction prevention system and hand hygiene sinks.
“We are very excited to be expanding our nursery space within the East Kootenay Regional Hospital,” said Lindsay Hetu, executive director of clinical operations in East Kootenay. “Our staff have been training for much of the past year to be able to provide safe care to these precious babies of the East Kootenays.”
The unit will temporarily move to the pediatrics area, and patients may experience some disruptions or increased activity in those units while construction is underway. When complete, the upgrades are expected to improve the quality of care for newborns and their families.
“We look forward to being able to keep families closer to home with this renovation.”
The project was jointly funded by the East Kootenay Foundation for Health, the province through Interior Health and the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District. Renovations are expected to be complete in January 2026.
