If you’re planning on travelling into Alberta this long weekend, be prepared for plummeting temperatures and wind chills, especially during the nighttime hours.
Environment Canada has issued Extreme Cold warnings for almost all of the province, including Lethbridge and Calgary.
“Extremely cold wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 45 are expected tonight. These extremely cold wind chills will continue into early next week before coming to an end,” said a statement from the weather agency Saturday afternoon.
It also recommended to dress warmly and cover up as, it says, frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.
While temperatures are expected to moderate during the day, it could still be bitterly cold with the wind chill.
Southeast BC, including the Kootenays, Columbia Valley, or Elk Valley aren’t part of any warnings just yet.
Temperatures, though, are forecast to fall into the upper minus 20s in the Elk Valley overnight Saturday and Sunday.
