A head-on collision between a Mainroad Contracting snow plow and pick-up truck on the Moyie River Bridge, just east of Yahk, closed a section of Highway 3 for close to eight hours Friday.
While RCMP and the highway contractor have to release any details, photos from the scene show ice and compact snow on the bridge deck, a potential leading factor; temperatures in the area were near freezing at the time of the motor vehicle incident.
With no detours around the collision, those who had no choice but wait, were finally able to continue on their travels just after 9:30 in the evening.
The road closure resulted in the cancellation of two hockey games – the Cranbrook Bucks’ game in Trail and the Kimberley Dynamiters match-up in Creston.
With team buses not able to get through, both teams took to social media to announce that the games would be rescheduled for a later date.
Overnight temperatures are forecast to be well below 0 degrees Celsius and both Drive BC and the RCMP warning of extremely slippery conditions, including the presence of black ice.
