A quick moving storm made its way through southeastern BC Friday evening bringing with it thunder, lightning, and strong winds.
Between 5,000 and 10,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the Southern Interior.
Environment Canada recorded a peak gust of 78 km/h at the weather station at Canadian Rockies International Airport during the 7:00 hour.
Almost 20 millimetres (19.6) of precipitation fell during the course of the evening, with much of that likely falling during the course of the two-hour storm.
In contrast, the Creston-area, to the west, received less than two millimetres of rain for the entire day.
Elk Valley’s weather station in Sparwood had its precipitation total listed as ‘missing.’
According to a social media posting by the Regional District of East Kootenay, emergency crews in the Columbia Valley were kept busy, however, no specifics were given.
BC Hydro, however, is reporting several pockets of ‘lightning-caused’ outages, particularly in the Columbia Valley, one of the largest affecting 1,036 customers in Radium Hot Springs.
