An investigation by Environment Canada that began in March of last year has now led to five environmental charges against Teck Coal Limited.
The charges allege the dumping of harmful substances from the company’s Line Creek operations into Dry Creek, which eventually flows into the Fording River.
Both waterways, the agency noted, are inhabited by fish.
It contends that the damaging substance included oil, chemicals, and pesticides that, if added to water, would degrade the water quality to the point where it could harm fish.
It should be noted that the allegations made against Teck have not been proven in court.
