The Elk River Alliance is celebrating World’s River Day with an event to clean the shores along the Elk River.
Their annual Elk River Clean Up is happening Sunday, outreach and education coordinator Evgeni Matveev says more than 100 volunteers removed over 80 garbage bags worth of trash along the shores last year.
“We’re trying to make sure that the river that we use over the course of the summer, that a bunch of tourists use over the course of the summer, stays perfect for future generations to enjoy and use like we do,” Matveev says
Meeting locations are at Fernie’s Dogwood Park boat launch, Sparwood’s entrance to the Elk River Trail and in Elkford at the bridge near Esso.
The event is set for Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Matveev is thanking the many students from Fernie Secondary School, as well as schools in Sparwood and Elkford, who are taking part in cleanup efforts around the river ahead of this weekend’s event.
