The City of Fernie says a water quality advisory that has been in place since July 20 is still in effect.
The city provided an update on water conditions this morning, saying regional drought conditions and high residential water use over the summer has forced a switch from the city’s secondary source James White Wells to the Fairy Creek Source.
Turbidity levels in Fairy Creek are over one NTU and while health risks are considered low, the City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice.
At-risk populations should also boil water for at least one minute if you intend on using water for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice or brushing teeth.
Fernie residents are being asked to continue to do their part to conserve water as the region remains in drought conditions in the East Kootenay.
