Students at Isabella Dicken Elementary in Fernie returned to an expanded and improved school to start the new school year.
An 80-seat addition was completed over the summer, with the new single story addition including four kindergarten classrooms, a media technology room, a special education room and a multipurpose room.
$7.8 million was invested into the expansion by the BC Government, with School District 5 contributing an additional $500,000.
The goal of the provincial funding was to build capacity at local schools and support the community for future generations.
An additional $3.5 million was provided by the province in December 2020 to purchase land for a future school in south Fernie.
