The BC Wildfire Service continues to battle several active wildfires in the East Kootenay.
On Thursday, the Regional District of East Kootenay issued an Evacuaiton Alert for 926 dwellings in the Panorama area due to increased fire behaviour on the nearly 4,000 hecatere Horsethief Creek Wildfire.

REGIONAL WILDFIRE UPDATE (Aug.17.23 – posted 11:30am)
Here is a morning update on the wildfire front with information from the BC Wildfire Service.
HORSETHIEF CREEK (7km N of Panorama)
• An Evacuation Alert was issued this morning for Toby Creek Road (SW of Lillian Lake) and Panorama Mountain Village.
• The Evacuation Alert for properties in the Horsethief Creek/Bear Mountain areas remains in effect with no changes in the past 24 hours.
• Safety of the public and responders remains BCWS’ top priority ahead of the passage of a cold front expected to result in increased and erratic fire behaviour.
• Yesterday, the Horsethief Creek fire grew in the Bruce and Law drainages.
• Today crews will be focused on moving equipment to safe areas and preparing for defensive actions.
• The Area Restriction remains in effect.
MIA CREEK (17km NE of Canal Flats)
• Crews will be focused on holding fire that moved past Moscow Road and strengthening guards from Lemon Road to Lemon Creek.
• Maintaining of access and egress routes will be a priority.
• The Area Restriction remains in effect.
YEARLING CREEK (23km E of Radium)
• Mop up continues along the Cochrane FSR, and crews will work to bring fire down to guards in a safe manner.
• The Evacuation Alert remains in effect with no changes in the past 24 hours.
MT. BINGAY (17km NW of Elkford)
• 403.4 hectares (mapped)
• On Wednesday, heavy equipment focused on pushing guard south of the fire to help prevent spread down the Elk Valley.
• Crews are continuing to work on contingency lines.
• The fire has spread across the Elk River Forest Service Road, where firefighters worked to stop growth yesterday.
• Today is expected to bring elevated winds and fire behaviour could increase and challenge containment lines.
• Structure protection personnel are on the site and will work to install protective systems as a precautionary measure if required.
LLADNAR (1.5km W of Sparwood)
• Crews continue to mop up and patrol on the south end of the fire following the planned ignition earlier this week.
• Patrols are ongoing along the east flank of the fire.
• The Evacuation Alerts remain in effect.
• The Area Restriction remains in effect.
RAYMOND PEAK (14km SW of Elko)
• This fire exhibited increased fire behaviour on Tuesday and was highly visible from the surrounding area.
• The fire activity was mainly on the eastern side of the fire, away from Elko and other communities.
• Yesterday, fire behaviour was low, burning at rank 1 and 2 and minimal growth westward had occurred.
• It is being regularly monitored by the BCWS.
KAMMA CREEK (27km west of Moyie)
• The fire has displayed increased fire behaviour this week due to hot, dry conditions and intermittent elevated winds. Increased smoke has been visible and will likely continue.
• There are no threats to structures or communities at this time.
• The BC Wildfire Service is monitoring this fire regularly.
• The Area Restriction, which includes Cooper Lake, remains in effect.
LUM CREEK (4.5km NE of Fisher Peak)
• This fire has displayed increased activity in recent days as a result of hot, dry conditions in the area and intermittent elevated winds.
• The fire has grown to 843 hectares as of Wednesday evening.
• It is not threatening any structures or communities at this time and is being regularly monitored by the BCWS.
JUBILEE MOUNTAIN (10km NW of Spillimacheen)
• There are no significant changes to report on this fire.
• Crews continue to work to achieve containment and will be watching the incoming weather event very closely.
With the anticipated weather moving in today, a reminder there is a potential for gusting or erratic winds, dry lightning and isolated thunderstorms particularly later in the day.
