Sparwood Mayor David Wilks says emergency crews are doing what they can to respond to the Lladnar Creek Wildfire as a new evacuation alert goes into effect.
The new alert covers the Whiskey Jack Subdivision, the Elk Valley Trailer Park, Upper and Lower Lodgepole Trailer Park, Savarie Road and Savarie Frontage Road and all properties west of Highway 43 up to 6161 Elk Valley Road.
Wilks says the alert is in response to new aggressive growth from the 448 hectare Lladnar Creek Wildfire just west of the community.
“Very scary for a lot of people in Sparwood Thursday night,” Wilks says. “It was very, very visible. Very, very close. BC Wildfire Service did an exceptional job to keep it away from the structures in Sparwood and lead it uphill and to the north.”
Wilks is urging residents to stay calm and be prepared in case the situation worsens.
“Its become more or less a beast of its own right now,” Wilks says. “Weather conditions are just not helping us with this very high temperatures, very low humidity. Then starting at around 11 a.m. every morning, we get the wind and that doesn’t help either.”
The new Evacuation Alert is on top of an existing alert for all properties in Sparwood Heights south of Sparwood Heights Drive and all properties on the upper and lower Matevic Road.
