The Mayor of Sparwood David Wilks is praising community members for their response to ongoing Evacuation Alerts from the Lladnar Creek Wildfire.
The Lladnar Creek blaze has increase in size slightly, now measuring at nearly 380 hectares.
Its also burning 1.5 kilometres west of Sparwood, resulting in evacuation alerts for thousands of residents and an area restriction order being placed by the BC Wildfire Service just outside of the community.
“They took heed to the alerts. It affects the majority of Sparwood Heights, which is about 1,600 residents, and both Upper and Lower Matevic Road. Most people took heed to that,” Wilks says.
Wilks says residents have been paying attention to the warnings and are supporting emergency efforts anyway they can.
“I’m very proud of everyone in Sparwood. They’ve for the most part stayed calm,” Wilks says. “They are prepared should anything escalate in the future and we’re hoping that doesn’t happen.”
The BC Wildfire Service put into place an Area Restriction Order around the Lladnar Creek wildfire Wednesday.
Maps of that restriction and more details on ongoing evacuation alerts and evacuation orders can be found by following the links.
Looking at other major wildfires in the region:
– The St. Mary’s River Wildfire is still at 4,093 hectares. The largest wildfire in the region hasn’t seen a change in its size since Saturday. We are beginning to see some Evacuation Orders in relation to that fire downgraded to Evacuation Alerts.
– The Mia Creek fire east of Fairmont Hot Springs was discovered on Monday. Its currently covering 881 hectares, unchanged from numbers reported yesterday.
– The Yearling Creek wildfire east of Radium Hot Springs is at 1,175 hectares. An Evacuation Order is in effect in relation to that wildfire.
– The Horsethief Creek Fire west of Invermere saw a slight increase in size. It now measures at 1,020 hectares. Evacuation Orders and Alerts remain in effect in response to the blaze.
