A presentation featuring a Cranbrook doctor who is treating people caught in the war in Ukraine is happening at the Studio Stage Door July 17.
Dr. Tracy Parnell is discussing her and her colleagues’ efforts to provide aid in dangerous areas, teach Ukrainian health professionals advanced trauma care and help purchase virtual equipment for patients stuck in areas under attack.
Since the beginning of the conflict Parnell has made six trips to Ukraine.
“I found myself on the eastern front,” Parnell says. “Providing medical care and training and education to the medical staff that were dealing with the most horrific wounds and the most ridiculous volume of patients I’ve ever encountered in my 30 years of medicine.”
Parnell has launched a GoFundMe campaign under the name MedicTeam4Ukraine for people to submit donations and support the initiative.
She says the campaign will help purchase specialized training simulators for Ukrainian doctors.
“We’re so used to them here in medical education, and there are very limited resources for that,” she says. “We recognize the need for special mannequins that reflect the wounds that we see in Ukraine, which are horrific.”
The presentation happening at the Studio Stage Door Monday July 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Tracey Parnell, a local Canadian doctor trained in Emergency Medicine and Disaster Management, works with a team of medical professionals from various countries to provide help to the wounded and sick in the most dangerous areas of Ukraine, where most NGOs (charitable organizations) do not venture due to the risk.
She and her colleagues have done multiple trips each, mostly to the eastern area, providing in-person care, knowing how difficult it is and what is needed to make a difference for these incredibly vulnerable populations.
They are raising funds to teach doctors, nurses and paramedics in Ukraine, advanced trauma care and to provide virtual care equipment for vulnerable patients stuck in areas under active attack.
The training includes certified courses from the International Trauma Life Support organization (iTrauma.org), a global leader in trauma care education.
Funds are used to purchase textbooks, register students, and buy equipment. “The training will dramatically improve their ability to care for and save the lives of their horrifically wounded patients,” says Dr. Parnell.
A public presentation will be held at The Studio Stage Door, 11 11th Avenue South, Cranbrook on Monday July 17th at 7:30pm for anyone who wishes to learn more about the program, the need, and the people involved.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by Dr. Parnell under the name MedicTeam4Ukraine for those who want to donate what they can to support these valiant efforts in Ukraine.
Dr. Parnell can be contacted through the GoFundMe page.
