The City of Cranbrook has concerns with a proposed bylaw amendment brought forward by the Regional District of East Kootenay.
Cranbrook City Council voted to reiterate they are not in favor of amending the Rockyview OCP and Electoral Area C South zoning bylaw to allow a four lot subdivision over an eight hectare property.
Mayor Wayne Price says the City’s official community plan does not support the development due to it’s size and potential impact on tax payers.
“[There’s] a number of reasons, certainly in time it may attach to our infrastructure,” Price says. “We’ve seen in the past where a community may have to take in a rural area, incorporate it into the city, and then the tax payers of Cranbrook are on the hook for adequate water, sewer and services.”
Price says the same development was previously objected to by council due to the developers’ original intent to build over fifty lots on eight hectares of land
“They’ve come back with something that we’ve accepted in the past, but these are considerably large lots,” says Price. “What we’re concerned about is now you’ve got these [four] units out there, now they’re going to be broken down again and sooner or later they’ll get there 53 lots which we were opposed to in the start. So we’re saying just no from the start.”
Price says he will take the City’s concerns to RDEK at their next meeting.
