The City of Fernie says a Water Quality Advisory issued earlier this week remains in effect following a water sampling at the James White Wells.
Sampling conducted by the City Friday confirmed selenium levels were beyond the 10 microgram per litre, beyond he BC Drinking Water Quality Guidelines’ standards.
This means Fernie will continue using the Fairy Creek Water Source, its quality is currently rated ‘fair’.
Interior Health is monitoring both of the City’s drinking water sources, to ensure the community has continued access to safe drinking water.

Responding to a ‘Fair’ rating on the Turbidity Index for the Fairy Creek Water Source, the City of Fernie issued a WATER QUALITY ADVISORY on April 12, 2023, while completing unscheduled maintenance at the James White Wells.
The City of Fernie has completed the repairs, however water sampling results received this morning show selenium concentrations in the James White Wells beyond the 10 microgram per liter standard set by the BC Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.
The Water Quality Advisory issued on April 12, will remain in effect until water quality improves at Fairy Creek or selenium levels in the James White Wells are within safe drinking water standards.
While the associated health risks are minimal, the City of Fernie and Interior Health recommend that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice.
For these at-risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making juice or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.
